Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which has been used extensively for about 150 years. It is versatile, plentiful and ideal as a fireproofing and insulating material. However, all forms of asbestos are considered to be carcinogenic. The inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause three main and potentially fatal diseases: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the lining of the lung), lung cancer and asbestosis.
All asbestos imports and use were banned in the UK in 1999. Under the Control of Asbestos at Regulations 2012 any building constructed before 2000 will require an assessment for asbestos containing materials. Domestic premises are excluded from this requirement, except for the case where an external party enters the property to carry out work.
The list of Asbestos containing materials used in industrial and commercial properties is extensive and further guidance can be found on the HSE website – http://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/
